The Eckhardt House, the only Malibu home designed by renowned mid-century architect Robert Skinner, AIA, has been listed for $11,495,000 by Elizabeth Donovan, an agent affiliated with the Pacific Palisades office of Coldwell Banker Realty. Located at 20737 Cool Oak Way in Malibu, Calif., the residence has four bedrooms and three bathrooms on approximately three acres.
“A true legacy property, this mid-century architectural masterpiece was preserved and meticulously restored by Maison d'Artiste, whose team was the custodian of the property since acquiring it from the original owner,” said Donovan. “A true legacy property, the Eckhardt House is located just minutes from Malibu's world-famous beaches, shops and restaurants.”
Flooded with natural light, the open floorplan and floor-to-ceiling windows showcase the magnificent panoramic ocean and coastline views from nearly every room. Open to the dining area and sunken living room, the thoughtfully designed chef's kitchen features designer appliances and exquisite custom cabinetry. Boasting access to the pool deck with endless ocean views, the expansive primary suite offers a walk-in closet and private sauna. The grounds include multiple patios, exquisite gardens, terraced landscaping and a perfectly-perched firepit.
The current owner purchased the house from Gisela Eckhardt, a successful physicist who helped develop the Raman lasers. When Eckhardt was looking for homes in Los Angeles, she fell in love with a Robert Skinner house in the Trousdale Estates community of Los Angeles, but she wanted to be in Malibu. She asked Skinner if he would design a home for her in Big Rock, and although he had never designed a property in Malibu, after visiting Cool Oak, he enthusiastically agreed to it and built it in 1966. The current owner first owned a property nearby and thought 20737 Cool Oak was an interesting house, so he knocked on the door and introduced himself to Eckhardt. They became friends, and he would stop by every few months to check on her and the house. He told her that he would love to buy the property one day. She agreed to sell to him if, and only if, he would agree not to tear it down. They shook on it, and she gave him the original plans for the home as well as an extension that Skinner drafted. He purchased the home from the trust after she passed away and honored their agreement of preserving the home.
