Nearly a half-ton of trash has been collected in under two months
Tim Smith, founder and leader of The Tim Smith Real Estate Group and Coldwell Banker Global Luxury Property Specialist affiliated with the Newport Beach office of Coldwell Banker Realty, has purchased and is operating The Good Seamaritan, a new litter skimming boat, to help clean up the coastal waters of Newport Beach. Since launching in September, the boat has collected 900 lbs. of trash. Smith’s investment in keeping the harbor clean includes the $131,000 for the boat as well as captain fees and other ongoing operational expenses.
“The boat’s goal is to clean up the harbor for our community by collecting trash. There are no organizations or governments that are doing this type of cleaning in Orange County, so living in the area, I found it important to do something to keep the waters clean,” said Smith.
When local Robert Sloan, who has been driving boats for 50 years, learned about the boat’s purpose, he was eager to fill the position as the boat’s Captain. The boat collects trash in two ways: a person using a net and a built-in cage. After the cage is filled, a crane pulls out and empties the trash, allowing the boat to head out again.
