Chad Voisen, an affiliate agent with the Carlsbad office of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, has listed a historical Rancho Santa Fe property designed by one of America’s first successful female architects Verna Cook Shipway for $2,599,000. Located at 16506 Los Morros in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., the five-bedroom, five-bathroom and approximately 4,000-square-foot home was also the residence of Verna Cook Shipway and her husband.
“Located in the prestigious Rancho Santa Fe covenant, this historic single-level home is the embodiment of class as well as French country mid-century elegance and architecture,” said Voisen. “Known as The Shipway House and The House On The Knoll, it was the home of the architect Verna Cook Shipway and her husband, Warren Shipway, in 1947. This house is perfect for any architecture enthusiast or anyone looking to live the epitome of the Rancho Santa Fe lifestyle.”
On a large lot on the west side of Rancho Santa Fe, this home embodies the unique qualities that were trademarks of Verna Shipway's designs such as delicate colors, artistic door designs, ceiling detail, stonework and exterior patios. The current owner, Penelope Voisen purchased the home in 1986 and has substantially updated it, yet the original representation of Shipway's style and design is well preserved. In addition to a separate guesthouse, the grounds offer a pool and multiple outdoor areas.
In 1914, Verna Cook Shipway was the first woman to study architecture at Columbia University, where she also received a scholarship. Later, she attended Ecole Speciale d'Architecture in Paris where out of 126 students she was the only female. Throughout her career, she designed many homes in the New York suburbs, including Berkeley and Scarsdale. In 1936, she was asked to design the first Ideal House for House and Garden. In 1939, Shipway designed a model home for the New York World's Fair; she was the only female architect invited to design an example of new thinking or architecture that embodied a female’s ideal home.
